Why get a Meyer Lemon Tree?

Compact enough even for urban balconies and limited-space gardens, Meyer Improved lemon trees will begin bearing large, juicy, thick-skinned fruit at an early age! Even if there were no fruit at all, this evergreen would be attractive enough to grow as an ornamental.

The leaves are lush and glossy, the small white flowers (arising indoors in late winter, just when the house needs some color and scent!) are intensely fragrant, and the habit is upright and well-branched. Depending on the size container and pruning you give it, this tree could reach 8 feet high and 10 feet wide, but can also be kept smaller.

The lemons are the real prizes of Meyer Improved. They arise in clusters of about 6 after the blooms pass. Thin immediately to about 2 or 3 per cluster, unless you want more plentiful but much smaller fruits.

An excellent sweet tasting lemon, great for cooking

Improved Meyer lemons have thin-skinned fruit that is less tart than 'Eureka' or 'Lisbon' than you buy in the store and are nearly thorn less. Fruits abundantly in winter but can have some fruit most months of the year. Mature fruit turns from green to yellow to slightly orange in color. The Meyer Lemon flesh is a light orange-yellow color, with juice sweeter than that of most lemons. Meyer Improved lemons have a great reputation as an indoor houseplant.

Close up, fruit ripens in stages so you don't get too much too soon.

 Meyer Lemon Cookies

Of all dwarf citrus trees, the Improved Meyer Lemon is one of the hardiest (it can withstand cold weather and some abuse). And it's one of the most productive, for its size. And, best of all, it is a small compact tree which can grow well in most U.S. climates. Our dwarf Improved Meyer Lemon Tree makes a striking addition to the patio or deck in the summer, resembling a topiary.

History

The Meyer Lemon Tree is named for Frank Meyer. He brought it to the United States from China in 1908 while working for the USDA. The tree became very popular and was widely grown until a virus that attacked Meyer Lemon Trees was discovered in the mid-1940s. Meyer Lemon Trees were banned in the United States in an effort to insure the safety of other lemon varieties from the virus. A new version of the Meyer Lemon Tree was developed that was virus-free and it was reintroduced in 1970. Since that time, the Meyer Lemon has become a favorite for the home grower. This variety is especially sweet and succulent. The Meyer Lemon has a thin skin and does not survive shipping well. As a result, the Meyer Lemon is not widely grown by commercial lemon growers. Because of its popularity in south Texas, 'Meyer' lemon is known locally as Valley lemon.
