Q. What do you know about the citrus called "Ruby
Red Grapefruit"?
A.
Ruby Red Grapefruit
trees can grow into medium-sized trees from 10-13' tall,
but can be pruning to 3-4 feet to keep indoors.
The fruit looks like ordinary grapefruit, except the rind is thicker and ripens
with a red hue. The Ruby Red Grapefruit juice has a sweet flavor with
just a hint of tartness, and it is very nutritious. The Ruby Red Grapefruit has
a juiciness that rivals that of the ever popular orange and sparkles with many
of the same health promoting benefits. Although available throughout the year,
they are in season and at their best from winter through early spring. Ruby Red
Grapefruits usually range in diameter from four to six inches.

Ruby Reds have a pink blush, a few seeds and one
can harvest them from November to May and they do well in containers. The
grapefruit itself is actually classified as a berry (hesperidium). Grapefruit at
maturity are bright yellow with a thick peel with white, pale yellow, pink or
red flesh.
Grapefruit are really good for you, healthy,
nutritious and fully of vitamin C and A. Plus there is a phytochemical called
lycopene which has been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers. Did you
know that Rudy Red Grapefruits contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol and are an
excellent source of dietary fiber? Plus these little gems of goodness are so
naturally sweet there is never any need to add sugar. Just by themselves a half
of grapefruit contains about 60 calories.
Ruby Red Grapefruits can be stored at room
temperature for up to a week or up to 8 weeks in your refrigerator. Take the
grapefruit out 2 hours prior to eating and let them sit and become room
temperature.
For maximum cold protection, grapefruit in
the home landscape should be planted on the south or southeast side of the
house. Distance from the house or other buildings and driveways or walkways
should be at least 12 feet to allow adequate room for the tree to grow to its
mature size. While large, overhanging shade trees will provide some cold
protection, grapefruit grows and produces best in full sun.
Watering of your
grapefruit tree should be slow and thorough; probably every week or two would
suffice in any but the very sandy soils. Nutrition should continue at about 1
cup of ammonium sulfate per year of tree age annually with split applications in
February, May and September. You'll need to adjust the rate for other
fertilizers based upon the relative nitrogen content.
No pruning should be necessary, as the
grapefruit tree will develop its natural shape without pruning.
Ruby Red Grapefruit Trees are easy to grow if they aren't
watered too often. Water only when the mix is dry an inch below the surface.
During a hot, dry summer, you may need to water every three or four days. In a
wet winter, the plant may go weeks between waterings. For every
Ruby Red Grapefruit that
dies from drought, you'll kill 200 from over watering.
Q: Can you ship to
my state?
A: We can ship throughout the lower 48 United States, except for Arizona.
Each citrus producing state prohibits importation of
citrus trees from other areas. However, we have vendors throughout the country
so we can ship CA, FL, LA, TX!!
Q: How do you
handle cold weather shipping (zones 7 or less)?
A: In the winter months, we are concerned about keeping the trees above
freezing in transit to colder states. We include Cold Weather Handling
for an extra charge of $10.00 in the 7-or-less zone pricing. This
includes special packaging and shipping by Priority Shipping service which is usually 2-3 days from the date we ship. If
it is too cold we will hold the package until the following week to
try again. Alternatively, you can choose to either delay shipment for
up to 30 days or order when the weather is warmer just put that in the

It is customer's
responsibility to inform us you have not received your tree within ONE WEEK of
your order date since trees should not be in the shipping box for more than that
and would allow us to track the package down. Informing us past that one week
voids any refund or replacement. You also
agree to the our terms and Guarantee when you order.
Because of
agricultural regulations, we cannot ship citrus to AZ.
We do not ship citrus internationally.
