Q. What do you know about the citrus called "murcott"? Will it freeze in this area?

A. At the present time, it is the most widely grown late Florida tangerine and the fruit is marketed under the name Honey Tangerine; however, its official variety name is Murcott.

The Murcott (Honey Tangerine) (Citrus reticulata) has shown the highest quality and most cold tolerance in field research..

Etymology: after Murcott Smith, Florida citrus grower, who developed the strain c. 1922 'Murcott' (Honey Murcott'; 'Murcott Honey Orange'; 'Red'; 'Big Red'; 'Honey Bell' tangelo)

First introduced from 1922, Murcotts produce fragrant white blossoms in March and April. These trees are also green the year round. The fruit matures in January-March making it the latest maturing tangerine type fruit, and it has excellent qualities for the fresh fruit market.

"Murcott's cold tolerance extends to the mid-20s. When temperatures of 26 degrees or colder are forecast, you must bring in the plant. By growing Murcotts in containers that can be brought inside, as needed, -- an unheated garage will do -- they can be grown successfully even in northern areas.

Citrus thrives in full sun. This plant needs eight to ten hours each day, even during the summer months. It tolerates some shade, but less sun means less fruit. In warm areas along the coast, murcotts may be grown in the ground against the sunny, southern wall of a home, if they are covered and heated during severe freezes in zones 8-11.

Murcotts have gained a lot of popularity in the last few years. They’re usually marked "honey tangerines" in the stores. They’re even sweeter than Honeybells, with a slightly different taste. They are lighter in color than traditional Tangerines, thin skinned and easy to peel. Seed number will vary from 12 to 24 seeds per fruit . Murcotts are great eating and make excellent juice, which is such a deep orange-gold it’s almost the color of a Halloween pumpkin. A pitcher of juice is so sweet it’s almost too sweet and needs to be cut with water or the juice of some regular oranges.

Murcotts grow and produce fruit for many years but may remain at a height of only 4 to 6 feet even after several years in a container.  Black plastic containers are relatively inexpensive and easiest to move when you have to protect plants during a cold snap. Use a loose, open potting mix featuring sphagnum peat moss. Soil or sand is not recommended. Add a quality slow-release fertilizer formulated for container use late Winter/early Spring and late Summer. Follow label directions and repeat as needed for deep green foliage.

It is imperative to properly fertilize and prune this cultivar as failure to do so can result in plant death. Murcotts, if not pruned, has been known to produce so many fruit in one season that it actually kills the tree. Pruning is easy and will be very beneficial if done every 2-3 years. Clip fruit from tree rather than pulling them off.

Murcotts are easy to grow if they aren't watered too often. Water only when the mix is dry an inch below the surface. During a hot, dry summer, you may need to water every three or four days. In a wet winter, the plant may go weeks between waterings. For every Murcott that dies from drought, you'll kill 200 from over watering.

A: We can ship throughout the lower 48 United States, except for Arizona, California (only certain trees can be shipped) and Texas. Each citrus producing state prohibits importation of citrus trees from other areas.

A. Orders received BY SATURDAY will be shipped MONDAY and TUESDAY. Special orders throughout the week. Usually via UPS Ground but some by USPS priority mail.

Q: How do you handle cold weather shipping (zones 7 or less)?
A: In the winter months, we are concerned about keeping the trees above freezing in transit to colder states. We include Cold Weather Handling for an extra charge of $10.00 in the 7-or-less zone pricing. This includes special packaging and shipping by Priority Shipping service which is usually 2-3 days from the date we ship. If it is too cold we will hold the package until the following week to try again. Alternatively, you can choose to either delay shipment for up to 30 days or order when the weather is warmer just put that in the order page comments.
